Learning Heroes IV
Aleck Bell was born in 1847, the same year as Thomas Edison. He was a restless student but excellent problem solver. His family’s business (teaching speech) and his mother’s deafness helped shape his future. Build the mechanical mouths, telegraphs, and musical instruments that were part of his inventing the telephone. Build working telephones. Study his speech lessons for Helen Keller, his mechanical lung, his metal detector for President Garfield, and record player (that bested Edison); his kite that rivaled the Wrights’, his rocket wheel, and his hydrofoil that only begin to capture the scope of his heroic curiosity.
